讲座简介：

Internal migration shapes human settlement, facilitates life course transitions and is integral to national development, but cross-national comparisons have been hampered by differences in the way migration is measured, poor access to data, methodological issues and inadequate summary statistics. The IMAGEProject reviewed global practice in 193 UN member States, assembled a repository of migration data for 135 countries, and built bespoke software (the IMAGE Studio) to address key issues and compute robust comparative indicators. This seminar summarises the findings of the project, focusing on two key dimensions of migration - overall intensity and spatial redistribution – in a sample of countries that encompass80% of the global population. It presents a global league table of migration intensities computed by coupling the approach proposed by et al. (2012) to the flexible aggregation routines of the IMAGE Studio, and shows how migration is linked to national development .Overall impacts of migration on spatial redistribution are compared using a new Index of Net Migration Impact (INMI) which distinguishes the contributions of migration intensity and migration effectiveness. The spatial effects of migration on the settlement pattern are revealed through regression models linking migration rates to population density. By way of conclusion we present a general model of the way population redistribution through internal migration proceeds with the process of national development.

主讲人简介：

Martin Bell retired as Professor of Human Geographyin December 2015. He joined the University of Queensland in 2001 following previous appointments at the University of Adeladie and in the Australian Government sector. During his time at UQ, he was Head of School from January 2003 until June 2009, and the Director, Queensland Centre of Population Research. He is also a panel member, IUSSP Scientific Panel on Migration and Urbanization.Professor Bell is a demographer and population geographer with interests in population mobility and internal migration, demographic projections and forecasts, regional and local population change and population models and methods of analysis.
